Global Services PMI by JPMorgan
Statement by JPMorgan The JPMorgan Global Services Business Activity Index fell to a four-month low of 52.0 in August, down from 53.0 in July, and below the series average of 54.9. Business activity has now risen for 25 successive months.
Commenting on the Survey David Hensley, Director of Global Economics Coordination at JPMorgan, said: "After a slight acceleration in July, August saw the growth slowdown in the global service sector resume. Activity rose to the least marked extent in four months as growth of new business slowed, meaning that service providers were unable to fully offset the weakness signalled at manufacturers. Cost inflation picked up for the first time since February, but remained well below the peaks seen earlier in the year."

Global Services PMI (Chart) Below is a chart of the JPMorgan Global Services PMI from December 2009 through the latest month reported. The PMI has been greater than 50, indicating global services are expanding, since August 2009, for 25 consecutive months. The PMI peaked in April 2010 and again in February 2011, which was a Post-Great Recession high. Any reading above 50 indicates the global services sector is expanding.
Commentary The Global services sector expanded for the 25th consecutive month, but the rate of growth slowed to 52.0% in August 2011. The Global Services PMI has significantly dropped from the Post-Great Recession high and a 58-month high (highest since April 2006) set in February 2011 at 59.2%.
